Happy Social Work Month Delaware Social Workers!

On behalf of the Chapter and association, I would like to thank you for all that you do for the profession and the communities we serve. I hope that you’ll take some time this month to celebrate being a social worker. NASW and the Delaware Chapter will be celebrating Social Work Month over the next few weeks, so be on the look-out for emails from the association. Locally, we were honored to participate in Governor John Carney’s event on March 1st proclaiming March Social Work Month in Delaware. Later this month, we will be honoring our Social Worker of the Year and Agency of the year during the 2018 Social Work Month Symposium on March 22.

Updates on Multi-Tier Licensure in DE

The NASW DE Multi-Tier Licensure (MTL) Subcommittee is pleased to report that both the DE Board of Clinical Social Workers and the Joint Legislative Oversight and Sunset Committee voted in January to support Multi-Tier Licensure for Social Workers in Delaware!!!  Social Work bill HB 311 has been pre filed, and is the identifying number for this legislation as it moves forward.  As of the completion of this Newsletter, HB 311 is being reviewed by the House Sunset Committee.  Stay tuned for updates regarding this legislation, including timelines and information on staying engaged in the work of NASW-DE.  In the meantime, continue to write and speak to your elected officials. Be specific and ask for their support AND VOTE for the bill when it is introduced in the House and Senate later this year.

NASW DE would like to congratulate Dr. Marlene Saunders for her tireless leadership and hard work getting us to this level, as well as the MTL Subcommittee, which consists of Dr. Sheridan Quarless Kingsberry, Norwood Coleman, and Phillip Thompson. 

Upcoming Meetings 

NASW DE Monthly Board Meeting - Thursday, March 8th, 2018 at 6:00pm. The next NASW-DE Board meeting will take place at 6:00 pm at Delaware State University. The meeting location is the Price Building, Room 215. The board meets the second Tuesday of every month unless indicated otherwise. The meetings are open to the public.

Delaware Board of Clinical Social Work Examiners - Next meeting: Monday, March 19th, 2018 at 9:00 the Cannon Building, located at 861 Silver Lake Boulevard, Dover, DE 19901.

Social Worker of the Year

Sheridan Quarless Kingsberry

Sheridan Quarless Kingsberry is an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Work at Delaware State University (DSU). She served as Principal Investigator/Project Director for the HOPE Project: A Community Partnership, a program that worked with children and families who were impacted by parental incarceration. Prior to joining DSU she served as Executive Director of the Division of Programs for the New Jersey Department of State and held various administrative positions in higher education and non-profit organizations. Dr. Quarless Kingsberry has served on several boards including the National Association of Social Workers-Delaware Chapter (President and Treasurer), YWCA Delaware (Fund Development Chair), Consortium for International Management, Policy and Development (CIMPAD), Associate Alumnae of Douglass College, and Serviam Girls Academy (DE). She also serves as a Site Visitor for the Council on Social Work Education. Dr. Quarless Kingsberry received her B.A. degree from Douglass College, her MSW from Rutgers University School of Social Work and her Ph.D. from the Graduate School, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Dr. Kingsberry was named as a Woman of Distinction, Rita Turner Award, by YWCA Delaware in 2010, one of 10 Dedicated and Deserving Social Workers in 2017 by Social Work Today, and Social Worker of the Year, 2018, by NASW-DE Chapter.
